agriculture in nepal

To increase the supply of agriculture production, new technology is being used. This includes genetic modification, chemical fertilizers and synthetic pesticides in agriculture. The use of chemical provides instant benefits but in long run these chemicals destroy the production capacity of the soil. They also negatively impact the lives of human beings, and lead to other environmental problems. At the same time the genetic modification of the food is also decimating the natural variety of plants. Organic agriculture means agricultural systems that promote the environmentally, socially and economically sound production of food. By respecting the natural capacity of plants, animals and local conditions, it aims to optimize quality in all aspects of agriculture and the environment. In other hand urbanization, industrialization and the infrastructure of the development have led to the rapid loss of agricultural land. The world's population, which is rapidly increasing, will suffer from this loss. We must not think of agriculture with a commercial mind, viewing it for our individual benefits. Therefore, by properly utilizing natural resources, which are gifts of nature, we should able to produce high quality agricultural products while compensating for nature. If we do not become timely conscious and create aware, the situation will be beyond the control and a great threat to the human existence in this world. Necessary steps must be taken immediately for preserving environment and its creatures by supporting (institutionalizing) organic farming globally. The only way we can save our planet is through sustainable organic agriculture. Our initiative actions in this regard can be recognition for the future generations. The whole world has to work hand in hand to uplift with this holistic view. Nepal is an agriculture-based economy with about 85% population dependent on agriculture whereas 80% of the population survives as agriculture laborers. The farmers have been doing hard labor but they are compelled to live in miserable condition. In Nepal, modern technology has been implemented for the development of agriculture field. It has a history of using chemical fertilizers and pesticides for the last 35 years for higher agriculture production yields. Because the use of these chemicals has been curtailed by the lack of developmental infrastructure in place to support it, it could not spread out all over the country. Because of this, farmers of Nepal are still far from all the negative environmental effects of the conventional method. The promotion of conventional farming techniques causes the soil to die day by day, as well as the more obvious problem of produce contamination. For example, before the use of chemical fertilizers, the quality of rice was very high quality and full of flavor. While cooking rice in a kitchen all the surrounding areas would be full of the aroma. With the use of fertilizer, the quality of rice has deteriorated. Similarly, the use of chemicals in agriculture has been decreasing the quality of our food. Due to the use of conventional fertilizer all agriculture products are being contaminated. Viewing all these we have established a non-profit making organization named Sustainable Agriculture Development Program, Nepal (SADP - Nepal). This organization is working for the promotion of agricultural production specially emphasizes on organic based agriculture. There is tremendous potentiality of organic agriculture in Nepal. It is in the primary stage in the lack of awareness among the farmers as well as advanced technology while the government of Nepal has not given any priority for the development of OA. Being a private non-profit organization we are trying our hard to develop OA in our capacity. We have been utilizing the local resources to provide maximum profit for the local farmers and people. Our intensive programs are dedicated for pioneering organic farming. For this purpose we have established a demonstration organic farm named Setivalley Organic Farm (SOF), which is under construction. The activities we have been doing can be seen in this album. (http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/sadpnepal/my_photos) Our continual effort certainly will be materialized someday. As it can be seen in the pictures there are women and kids who are displaced from remote villages by reason of Maoist rebel and some low cast women. We have to provide them food, shelter, medicine and education for their children, some other families is willing to come to our farm but due to lack of fund we cannot afford them. As we are thinking to convert our farm to Community Supported Farm as well as training center which may be the first Community Supported Farm in Nepal. Our concern is to promote organic agriculture in the nation wide in sustainable way. It will be of great value if your organizations help/guide/suggest us in this regard will be highly encouraged to apply our effort for the development of organic agriculture in the more systematic and advanced way. We deserve any kind of support/help from organization like yours, providing exchange visit/trainings or other types of assistance. We do hope that your small contribution may bring vital change in the field organic agriculture in Nepal. Looking forward to hearing your kind response which will encourage us to work further in this field.
